SR-22 Filings in Texas

Need an SR-22 to get your license back? We find a carrier that files it with Texas DPS for you.

What it covers

What an SR-22 is

A certificate your insurance company files with Texas DPS to prove you carry at least the state minimum liability. It is not a separate type of insurance.

Owner SR-22

For drivers who own a vehicle. The policy covers your listed vehicles.

Non-owner SR-22

For drivers who do not own a vehicle but still must file one (DPS).

SR-22A

A certificate showing the policy is prepaid for at least 6 months, required in some crash and security-deposit cases (DPS).

Who needs it in Texas

  • Texas DPS requires an SR-22 after things like a crash-related suspension, a second or later conviction for driving without insurance, or an unpaid civil judgment from a crash.
  • You must keep it for 2 years from your most recent qualifying conviction, or from the date the judgment was rendered (DPS).
  • The policy must meet the Texas minimum liability of 30/60/25: $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident, $25,000 property damage.
  • If it lapses, your insurer notifies DPS, your license can be suspended again, and you will need a new SR-22 plus a $100 reinstatement fee (DPS).

Common questions

How long do I need an SR-22 in Texas?

Two years from the date of your most recent conviction that requires it, or from the date a judgment was rendered (DPS).

Can I just send DPS my insurance card?

No. DPS does not accept a card or policy in place of an SR-22. Your insurer must file the certificate (DPS).

I do not own a car. Do I still need one?

Yes, if DPS requires it. You can get a non-owner SR-22 policy (DPS).

What happens if my SR-22 lapses?

Your license can be suspended again, and you will need a new SR-22 and a $100 reinstatement fee (DPS).

If I file late, does the 2 years restart?

No. It counts from the conviction date, so if you file a year late you generally need it for one more year, unless a new conviction extends it (DPS).
