Motorcycle Insurance

Texas treats motorcycles like cars for insurance. We compare carriers so your bike is legal and properly covered.

What it covers

Liability

Pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others. Texas requires at least 30/60/25.

Collision and comprehensive

Optional coverage for damage to your bike from a crash, theft, fire, hail or vandalism. Lenders usually require it.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist

Helps when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little.

Personal injury protection (PIP)

Helps with medical bills and lost wages. Texas policies include it unless you reject it in writing.

Custom parts and gear

Some carriers offer extra coverage for accessories and riding gear.

Who needs it in Texas

  • Anyone who rides a motorcycle, moped or motor-driven cycle on Texas roads must show financial responsibility, the same as a car (TDI).
  • Minimum liability is $30,000 per injured person, $60,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage (30/60/25).
  • Mopeds need the same liability coverage as motorcycles, even with smaller engines (TDI).
  • Helmet law: riders and passengers must wear a helmet unless they are at least 21 and have either completed an approved safety course or carry health insurance that covers motorcycle injuries (Transportation Code ch. 661).

Common questions

Is motorcycle insurance required in Texas?

Yes. Texas requires motorcyclists to carry at least 30/60/25 liability coverage, the same as cars.

Does a moped need insurance?

Yes. Texas requires the same liability insurance for mopeds and motor-driven cycles as for motorcycles.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Riders under 21 must. Riders 21 and older are exempt only if they completed an approved motorcycle safety course or have health insurance that covers motorcycle injuries.

Does my car policy cover my motorcycle?

Usually not. A motorcycle generally needs its own policy or to be listed on a policy that covers it. Ask us to check yours.

Is minimum coverage enough?

The minimum keeps you legal, but it may not cover a serious crash. We can show you higher limits and optional coverages side by side.
