What to know in Texas
- People who must file a U.S. tax return or are listed on one, such as a spouse or dependent, but are not eligible for a Social Security number (IRS).
- You will need original or certified copies of documents that prove identity and foreign status, such as a passport (IRS).
- An ITIN expires if it is not used on a federal tax return for 3 consecutive years (IRS).
- Ways to apply: by mail to the IRS in Austin, or in person at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center, a VITA site with ITIN services, or an IRS Acceptance Agent or Certifying Acceptance Agent (IRS).
Common questions
What is the difference between an Acceptance Agent and a Certifying Acceptance Agent?
Both are approved by the IRS. A Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) can also authenticate most original documents so you can keep them. A regular Acceptance Agent cannot authenticate documents (IRS).
Do I have to mail my original passport?
If you apply by mail, you send originals or certified copies, which the IRS returns. Applying in person at a Taxpayer Assistance Center or with a CAA lets you keep most originals (IRS).
How long does it take?
The IRS says to allow about 7 weeks, or 9 to 11 weeks during tax season (January 15 to April 30) or if you apply from overseas (IRS).
Does an ITIN expire?
Yes, if it is not used on a federal return for 3 consecutive years. Renew it with Form W-7 before using it on a return (IRS).
Is there a free option?
Yes. IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers and some VITA sites offer free ITIN help, though appointments can take weeks (IRS).
